Gravel, concrete, lawn and turf removal in Phoenix

We help homeowners take out the gravel, concrete, artificial turf and unused lawn that keep a yard hot and dead, so it can be upgraded with shade, rainwater and food. Removal is the first step of almost every transformation.

Why removal comes first

Most of what covers a typical Phoenix yard works against it.

Hardscape makes Phoenix hotter and drier, especially where nothing shades it. Gravel and concrete store the day’s heat and give it back all night. Artificial turf is worse: contrary to what the rebate programs around the Valley suggest, fake grass makes the heat island effect stronger, not only because it is hotter but because it destroys the soil life underneath it. A living lawn cools a yard, but it drinks a lot to do it, and an unused one is a bill with no return.

So when we plan a yard, removals come first, ahead of irrigation, trees, shade, basins and tanks. Clearing the ground once, properly, means nothing that follows has to be undone. We remove hardscape whenever it is not needed to meet a project’s goals, and leave what is.

Measure what comes out and see the tons

Your address opens the satellite view of your yard. Outline the gravel, concrete, lawn or turf, and each area is listed with its square feet and the tons to haul. The square footage comes with you to the quote.

Save this to your property

A free account turns these shapes into your property, where the planner sets the depth and disposal for each one and a crew quote starts from them. What you drew here stays on this device in the meantime.

What we remove, and where it goes

Three kinds of material, three ways of disposing of them. We reuse first, and send the rest to the least harmful place we can.

  • Gravel and concrete

Broken out and hauled off wherever it is not needed to meet the project’s goals. Gravel is reused in other areas or other projects whenever possible. The rest goes to the inert landfill, the least toxic kind.

  • Grass lawns

Unused lawn is reduced or removed entirely. Lawn you actually use stays, with better soil structure and more species diversity so it needs less water. Living sod is repurposed in other yards when it can be; otherwise it goes to the regular landfill, where it helps build soil.

  • Artificial turf

Pulled up along with its base. We never reinstall it, because of what it does to the soil and the heat it adds, so it all goes to the inert landfill until there is a better way to dispose of it.

How it works

Measure, quote, remove, and leave the ground ready for what comes next.

  1. Measure it

Outline each area on the satellite view of your yard above, or ask for a quote and we measure on site. Either way the square footage is what the price is built on.

  2. Free quote, then a date

Estimates are free, and we are licensed, bonded and insured. A 30% deposit of the accepted estimate puts you on the schedule, with a short checklist for the days before we arrive.

  3. Removal day

Our crew and equipment are local. Concrete is broken and loaded, gravel is scraped and either reused on site or hauled off, sod and turf are cut and rolled. Dump fees are extra where they apply, and everything that is not staying leaves with us.

  4. Ready ground

What is left is bare soil, the starting point for basins, irrigation, trees and plantings. If you have a design, the next phase follows it. If you do not, the free consultation is where to start.

Questions people ask before a removal

How do I get a price?

Removals are quoted on the measured area and what is under it, so there is no flat rate to print here. Outline the areas on the map on this page for a first idea, or ask for a quote and we measure on site. Estimates are free, and we are licensed, bonded and insured.

Do you haul the material away?

Yes. Gravel is reused in other areas or other projects whenever possible, and the rest goes to the inert landfill, the least toxic kind. Living sod is repurposed in other yards when it can be, otherwise it goes to the regular landfill, where it actually helps build soil. Artificial turf goes to the inert landfill. Dump fees are extra where they apply.

Can you reinstall my artificial turf somewhere else?

No. Fake grass is hotter than the air around it and it kills the soil life underneath, so we never reinstall it. It goes to the inert landfill until there is a better way to dispose of it.

Should I remove my whole lawn?

Not always. A living lawn does cool a Phoenix yard, but it is thirsty. If nobody uses it, we like to reduce it or remove it entirely. If you do use it, we improve the soil structure and add species diversity so it needs less water.

What happens to the bare ground afterward?

Removal is usually the first phase of a bigger plan: basins for rainwater, irrigation, shade trees and plantings follow. If you do not have a plan yet, the free consultation is the place to start, and the design phase gives you one.

Where do you do removals?

The Phoenix metro, from Buckeye to Apache Junction and Anthem to Queen Creek. Crews and equipment are local, which is what keeps the price fair. Outside the Valley we can still design the work and point you to someone good nearby.
